What We Believe

First Orthodox Presbyterian Church of San Francisco is a faithful congregation of the one visible Church of Jesus Christ to which he has given the ministry, oracles, and ordinances of God, for the gathering and perfecting of the saints, in this life, to the end of the world; where He, by his own presence and Spirit, according to his promise, make them effectual to accomplish His plan and purposes.

There is salvation in no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved, except the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man comes to the Father, but by me.”

All mankind is born dead in trespasses and sins, alien to and enemies of God, deserving his wrath and eternal separation from Him, the Creator and Preserver of all goodness and life. There is none righteous, no, not one. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Our righteous acts are as filthy rags in his sight.

Only by God’s free and undeserved grace are we saved from this helpless condition. By grace we are saved through faith. This faith is not of ourselves: it is the gift of God. We may not boast. Redeemed men and women are the workmanship of God, created in Christ Jesus for good works, in which God has ordained we should walk.

Saving faith is not merely a matter of intellectual assent or acceptance of historical facts. Faith which justifies is created in the heart of a sinner by God’s grace, using His Spirit and Word, convincing him of his sin, and his inability in himself to recover out of this lost condition; enabling him to embrace the promises of the good news in Christ, resting on His righteousness for pardon of sin, and acceptance in the sight of God as righteous, because of Christ’s death for our guilt and his obedience being credited to us.

The holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are the Word of God, the only rule of faith and obedience.

Our mission is to Glorify God the Father by making Jesus Christ known in the power of the Holy Spirit through the preaching of the inerrant and inspired Word of God, teaching and obeying all things Christ commanded, preaching and worshiping as to please God and not to be man-pleasers.

Our hope is that in the sharing of God’s Word He might by His Holy Spirit use it to open the eyes of men and women, turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to Himself, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and an inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith in Jesus Christ alone.

Please consider joining us for the worship of Almighty God in the name of Jesus Christ.

Our Leaders

Glenn Ferrell Glenn Ferrell has been pastor of First Orthodox Presbyterian Church in San Francisco since November 5th, 2010. Previously, he was pastor of Sovereign Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Boise, Idaho, for more than five years; and prior to that a church planter and evangelist in the Appalachian region of Kentucky. Glenn grew up in Eastern Kentucky, the grandson of coal miners, a seventh generation Appalachian. He attended college in North Carolina, and seminaries in New Jersey, Kentucky and California. He did additional graduate work in Ohio and Kentucky. He was ordained to the ministry in 1987. Before that he worked in communications, information systems, and as a community developer. He served in Southeast Asia with the Army Signal Corps in the mid 70s. Married to Susan Nye Ferrell; they have six children and twelve grandchildren.

Glenn is an orthodox, confessional Calvinist, who subscribes to the historical Westminster Standards as an accurate summary of the most important teachings of the Bible. Therefore, he holds the historic formulas regarding the Trinity, the person and work of Jesus, the inspiration and authority of the scriptures, and salvation by grace through God-given faith in Jesus Christ alone. Worship is the highest work of believers, to be done according to God’s command; preaching and hearing the word our great privilege, blessing and means of grace. The Lord’s Day is a delight, given by God for the care of our souls. Christ’s Church belongs to Him and should be governed according to His direction in the Bible, being reformed and transformed by the Word of God alone. In San Francisco one finds most of the false religions of mankind; one also finds biblically faithful churches advancing the Kingdom through preaching, practicing and living God’s truth. It is a privilege to minister with one of these congregations.
